Tulips
are spring-blooming perennials that grow from bulbs. Depending on the
species, tulip plants can grow as short as 4 inches (10 cm) or as high
as 28 inches (71 cm). The tulip's large flowers usually bloom on scapes.
Most tulips produce only one flower per stem, but a few species bear
multiple flowers on their scapes. The showy, generally cup- or
star-shaped tulip flower has three petals and three sepals, which are
often termed tepals because they are nearly identical. These six tepals
are often marked near the bases with darker colorings. Tulip flowers
come in a wide variety of colors, except pure blue. Tulip stems have few
leaves. Plants typically have 2 to 6 leaves, with some species having
up to 12. The tulip's leaf is strap-shaped, with a waxy coating, and
leaves are alternately arranged on the stem.
During
the Ottoman Empire, the tulip became very popular in Ottoman
territories and was seen as a symbol of abundance. In fact, the era
during which the Ottoman Empire was wealthiest is often called the Tulip
era or Lale Devri in Turkish. In classic and modern Persian literature,
sp ecial
attention has been given to these beautiful flowers, and in recent
times, tulips have featured in the poems of Simin Behbahani. However,
the tulip was a topic for Persian poets as far back as the thirteenth
century.
The
Black Tulip is the title of a historical romance by the French author
Alexandre Dumas, père. The story takes place in the Dutch city of
Haarlem, where a reward is offered to the first grower who can produce a
truly black tulip.
Every
spring, there are several tulip festivals in North America, including
the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan, the Skagit Valley Tulip
Festival in Skagit Valley, Washington, the Tulip Time Festival in Orange
City and Pella, Iowa, and the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa,
Canada. Tulips are now also popular in Australia and several festivals
are held during the Southern Hemisphere's spring.
Mangrove
trees
A mangrove is a tropical marine
tree. Mangroves have special aerial roots and salt-filtering tap roots which enable
them to thrive in brackish water. Brackish water is salty but not as salty as
sea water. Mangrove trees are commonly planted and found in coastal areas.
Mangroves
can serve as walls of protection for natural disaster in coastal area like tsunami.
Healthy mangrove forests had helped save lives in the Asia disaster tsunami and
people tended to respect these natural barriers even more, especially after the
tsunami.
There are several species of
mangrove tree found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity, while others
like to be very-close to a large fresh water source such as river. Some prefer
areas that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with
sea water every day during high tide. Other species grow on dry land but are
still part of the ecosystem. The times of India reported that rare species of
mangrove had been found and was also known as the looking-glass tree, probably
because the leaves are silver-coated.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk
and leave above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to be firmly
attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves.
Any part of root that appears above the water flows oxygen to the plant under water surface. as the soil begin to build up, these roots procedure additional roots that become embedded in the soil.

Use of Passive
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.
Example: My bike was stolen.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:
Example: A mistake was made.
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).Form of Passive
Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)
Example: A letter was written.
When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:- the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
- the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
- the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)
Examples of Passive
Tense | Subject | Verb | Object | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Simple Present | Active: | Rita | writes | a letter. |
Passive: | A letter | is written | by Rita. | |

Hilfsverben | Active: | Rita | can write | a letter. |

Examples of Passive
Tense | Subject | Verb | Object | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Present Progressive | Active: | Rita | is writing | a letter. |

Conditional II | Active: | Rita | would have written | a letter. |
Passive: | A letter | would have been written | by Rita. |
Passive Sentences with Two Objects
Rewriting an active sentence with two objects in passive voice means that one of the two objects becomes the subject, the other one remains an object. Which object to transform into a subject depends on what you want to put the focus on.Subject | Verb | Object 1 | Object 2 | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Active: | Rita | wrote | a letter | to me. |
Passive: | A letter | was written | to me | by Rita. |
Passive: | I | was written | a letter | by Rita. |
Personal and Impersonal Passive
Personal Passive simply means that the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. So every verb that needs an object (transitive verb) can form a personal passive.
Example: They build houses. – Houses are built.
Verbs without an object (intransitive verb) normally cannot form a
personal passive sentence (as there is no object that can become the
subject of the passive sentence). If you want to use an intransitive
verb in passive voice, you need an impersonal construction – therefore
this passive is called Impersonal Passive.
Example: he says – it is said
Impersonal Passive is not as common in English as in some other languages (e.g. German, Latin). In English, Impersonal Passive is only possible with verbs of perception (e. g. say, think, know).
Example: They say that women live longer than men. – It is said that women live longer than men.
Although Impersonal Passive is possible here, Personal Passive is more common.
Example: They say that women live longer than men. – Women are said to live longer than men.
The subject of the subordinate clause (women) goes to the beginning
of the sentence; the verb of perception is put into passive voice. The
rest of the sentence is added using an infinitive construction with 'to'
(certain auxiliary verbs and that are dropped).Sometimes the term Personal Passive is used in English lessons if the indirect object of an active sentence is to become the subject of the passive sentence.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has made a visit to the Gaza Strip and repeated his condemnation of the blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt. Meanwhile, international efforts to get Israelis and Palestinians back to negotiations are stepping up.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon came the region to press Israelis and Palestinians to return to negotiations. On Sunday, while visiting the Gaza Strip, he condemned Israel for the blockade it and Egypt have on the enclave.
"I have repeatedly made it quite clear to Israel's leaders that the Israeli policy of closure is not sustainable and that it is wrong," Mr. Bn said. "It poses unacceptable suffering of human beings. This policy is also counterproductive. It undercuts moderates and empowers extremists."
Israel has imposed a blockade since the 2007 violent takeover of the Strip by the militant group Hamas. Israeli officials say their restrictions on cement and other construction materials are meant to prevent Hamas from building bunkers to attack Israel.
As a result of the blockade, residents have been unable to rebuild the thousands of homes that were destroyed during Israel's war on militants in 2008 and 2009.
While in the region, Ban has criticized Israel's construction of settlements on lands it occupies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
